Things You Can Find On Poetry Contest Sites

By Shirley Hughes

If you think you are capable of writing poems without much training from a teacher, you may be one of the lucky few who has it as a natural gift. On the other hand, you may not have displayed such a skill, even as you approach your twenties, but that does not mean you cannot be a good writer of poems. You can also do so well if you are taught by some experts and go to some poetry contest sites to see if you can take up a challenge.

Going to the website will reveal a lot of things about any competition that is active. People visit contest sites to know several things including the prizes to be won. Some good poets feel they may be wasting their time participating in the prize does not look handsome. On the other hand, some others wouldn't mind learning anew if the prizes are mouthwatering.

Sometimes, the prizes include a trip to a city where you have always wanted to be. This is how several young scholars took flights abroad for the first time. If you have never visited any other country, you may begin practicing poetry because it can pay off in this regard. Just being mentioned as a finalist can grant you a flight ticket to America, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world.

Sometimes, scholarship opportunities are listed on the website. Some people will be happy to join whether it is a full scholarship or not especially if they would have to school in one of the best institutions for literature. Sometimes, the winner is even asked to make a choice on the school to study.

Money is also given as a prize. If the money is big, some people would love to join even when they think they may not win. Depending on the stages involved, the money mapped out for this is planned for the different winners that may emerge in each category. Winners of each region should not get as much as is given to the overall winner.

Another detail to be checked on the site is the age limit for contestants. Some competitions are strictly for teenagers, others for those in their early twenties, while some have no age bracket at all. Even if you are too good at writing poems, you would need to verify this to avoid wasting your time.

Some contests require fees so knowing this ahead of time makes you prepared. Even if you are not buoyant, it is advisable to ask friends for it if you are sure of writing well. You can be sure if the competition demands a fee or not by checking the organizer's website.

Every poetry competition has a closing date. This is the date when no more submissions will be accepted. Knowing this date will help you plan yourself well so that you can write and edit before the closure. You may also want to see a friend who may be better than you to help you edit it.
