Apart from the fact that murals form an integral part of the general architectural outlook, the art expressed on the walls should also exude a miasma of social significance. The idea should be depicted clearly, without altering the structural plan.

Ever since the conception of art, muralists have designed and devised various means of expressing their art. Since the olden days, some techniques used include; fresco, encaustic and tempera, and oil on canvas, though this began gaining popularity more recently. During the ancient Greek and Roman interaction in the Mediterranean, tempera and encaustic painting were used and employed the utility of molten wax and dilute egg yolk respectively as binders.

As aforementioned, modern or contemporary techniques of producing murals came much later, and it was only during the early years of the sixteenth century that oil on canvas artists began producing decorative canvas artworks as murals. However, the only drawback of using this form of painting is that the binder normally used, reduces the quality of pigments and makes them assume an unpleasant look if subjected to bad climatic conditions.

Muralists create fun and eye catching pictorial expression that leaves an individual with no other choice but to stare incessantly. People are often observed to be moved by the knack of the artists to produce such enormous pictures with equal proportions. Truly, this form of painting supersedes all others.
