By Deborah Cole

Trailers serve different purposes to different people. No matter your reason for living in a trailer, you need to ensure that it is stored properly. Do not just assume that it will be in the exact condition you leave it in when you come back after a long time if you did not prepare for the storage. Read on for tips on proper trailer storage.

Ensure that you clean the space before leaving. This should be on the day you leave or one day prior. Ensure that none of the seals are broken too. Applying wax on them ensures that dirt does not build up and also there is minimal damage from harsh sun rays. Any repairs or replacements which are needed should be taken care of too.

Do not ever leave the container with poor ventilation. Moisture will accumulate leading to mildew growth. It is demanding and expensive to deal with mold issues. Mold will also make the space to have a funny smell. The number of vents installed will depend on the size of the container. Placing them on the roof ensures efficiency and also keeps rain from getting inside the trailer.

The kind of curtains or even blinds you have fitted on the windows will also influence the mold situation. Ensure that they are able to keep the furniture and fixtures inside from getting damaged by sun rays and also ensure that enough sunlight gets in. The best option in such a case is translucent materials.

If you have any items which can be slid off their position then you need to do so before leaving. If not, they might become stuck or even undergo corrosion. In some cases, the items will not be repairable and you will have to get replacements. Some like the mechanical parts, rubber seals, the roof and slide toppers need to be taken out and corrosion protectors applied. Baby powder is a great option to avoid stuck objects.

Pests are a menace all over the world. Depending on the kind you are dealing with, appropriate measures should be taken to keep them off. If there are external openings, it is mandatory for you to seal them. Bugs like to hide in piping systems, exhausts of furnaces, the outer part of the vent and even plumbing vents. Check the spots just to be safe.

Gadgets which are powered by electricity must be turned off. Also, all the lights in the trailer should be switched off. The main system can be turned off if the electrical energy is not needed by any crucial system. In case of batteries, wires must be disconnected so that the battery energy does not get drained off. There is no point in using a lot of money in power when it is not serving you in any way.

The plumbing system is susceptible to temperature changes. Decisions ought to be made depending on the season. During summer, the pipes which are in open places are more likely to burst if they become brittle. To curb this issue, the piping system can be left with about a quarter or half the amount of water. On the other hand, they should be completely dry during winter. However, they can be fed with anti-freeze to eliminate the adverse effects brought by excess contraction and expansion due to fluctuating temperatures.
