All About The Medieval Author

By Mattie Knight

During the medieval times of Europe, many books about their era was written as writing was one of the most respected arts of that time. Of course when one would think of medieval literature, he would probably think about the literature that would stem from Europe during the medieval ages. During that time, there were four main genres that a medieval author would work on namely the theological works, the secular works, the allegories, and the works of women.

Starting off would be the theological works as these types of literature were the most popular during that era. Since the church was one of the highest entities, it was natural that they had huge influence over literary works. It was because of this that a lot of writers chose to write about religious and philosophical themes.

Now just to give a background, some of the notable authors of this genre would be Pete Abelard and the very famous Saint Thomas Aquinas. In particular, Saint Thomas Aquinas was one of the most well known theological authors of that time since he was a very wise and knowledgeable man who was well versed in the scriptures. He was also known to be a very good writer as well which is why his books are still being used today and also followed by many religious orders.

Other than the theological works, there would also be some secular works as well. Some notable authors in this type of genre would be Sir John Mandeville who wrote the Travels of Sir John Mandeville and also Sir John Mallory. These people focused on other themes that were not focused on religious themes but on fiction, history, and other kinds of themes that were of interest to readers at that time.

Other than that, there are also many poets that lived during the medieval time period. One extremely influential poet during the late middle ages would be none other than Geoffrey Chaucer and was one of the most important writers before Shakespeare lived. Some of his works would include the Roman de la rose, and the allegorical Book of the Duchess.

Now most people would think that all the authors that existed during that time were all men but there were in fact a lot of women authors during that time. Of course it was stated above that religious works were the most popular during that time. It was because of this that women authors used this venue to be able to spread their works to the people.

Now if one would look at some of the most notable authors of that time, he would probably see Julian of Norwich at the top of the list. She was actually the very first woman to have published a book in the whole of England. What made her works pretty interesting was that they were based on visions she had when she was having a terminal illness.

So for those who are interested in medieval literature, take a look at some of these bits of information. It is good to know about the classics of that era because many modern day books were actually inspired by those old classics. Those old classics are timeless and can be seen even in modern works.
